The Bully Plays
Directed by Wendy Maples
Produced and Designed by Courtney Corey

Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.

Theatre Arts School of San Diego is proud to present this anthology of plays which was commissioned in response to the growing epidemic of bullying and the all-too-often tragic results. The plays are touching, imaginative, powerful, uplifting and funny.

Theatre Artists ages 10-17 will all be cast in principle roles in this production. We will work together to create an art installation entitled “The Bully Wall,” which will serve as a feature in the set design for this play. Audiences will also engage with “The Bully Wall” during performances.

“Bullying is a catch-phrase for treating others as less than human. All of these plays help teenagers develop their moral imaginations and see there is no us/them. There is only us.”

-Mary Pipher, Ph.D.

THE BULLY PLAYS INCLUDES:

Beasts by Ernie Nolan. In ancient Greece, young Theseus enters a labyrinth to destroy a rumored beast. But when human and creature come face to face, the lines between beast and boy become blurred.

The Bully Pulpit by Dwayne Hartford. Barbara wants to be class president so that she can stamp out bullying.

A Bunch of Clowns by Sandra Fenichel Asher. A ringmaster leads a bunch of clowns through a series of tableaux that demonstrating instances of bullying complete with bystanders. The Ringmaster demands that the New Kid must decide which sort of clown he’d like to be: a bully, the bullied, or a bystander.

Downhill by Eric Coble. How does a distant corporate executive having a bad day threaten to ruin the coloring plans of a little girl in elementary school? Downhill comically explores the inevitable flow of fear and impatience, and what, if anything, can be done to halt it.

Happy Birthday, Heather Higby by Stephen Gregg. Mercy Nightingale has devised a plan to destroy her classmate and arch-nemesis, Heather Higby. Her plan involves the audience. Charlene wants to stop Mercy, and her plan involves the audience too, but in a surprising way.

Here Be Dragons by Doug Cooney. Can a victim be a bully? Can a bully be a victim? Students on a field trip to a natural history museum debate the nature of bullying and self-protection with three unlikely dinosaurs.als

Theatre can provide a safe space in which artists can articulate and respond to emotions about bullying. While we are dedicated to providing top-notch training for our theatre artists, the lessons learned in this project extend far beyond acting training. These fictional stories provide opportunities for critical thinking and collaboration in order to practice empathy and build social awareness. We look forward to this incredible journey with the company of The Bully Plays.
