The Bully Plays
Directed by Wendy Maples
Produced and Designed by Courtney Corey

Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.

Theatre Arts School of San Diego is proud to present this anthology of plays which was commissioned in response to the growing epidemic of bullying and the all-too-often tragic results. Our company of 11 theatre artists will present four pieces that are touching, imaginative, powerful, uplifting and funny. We also invite our audiences to engage with “The Bully Wall” - an art installation created by our theatre artists that seeks to provide a space for expression.

This production is suitable for audiences ages 6 through adult.

“Bullying is a catch-phrase for treating others as less than human. All of these plays help teenagers develop their moral imaginations and see there is no us/them. There is only us.”

-Mary Pipher, Ph.D.

“THE BULLY PLAYS” INCLUDES:

Beasts by Ernie Nolan. In ancient Greece, young Theseus enters a labyrinth to destroy a rumored beast. But when human and creature come face to face, the lines between beast and boy become blurred.

The Bully Pulpit by Dwayne Hartford. Barbara wants to be class president so that she can stamp out bullying.

What Goes Around by D.W. Gregory. A bullying boss sets off an emotional chain reaction that comes back to him in ways he never imagined.

Here Be Dragons by Doug Cooney. Can a victim be a bully? Can a bully be a victim? Students on a field trip to a natural history museum debate the nature of bullying and self-protection with three unlikely dinosaurs.als

PLEASE PURCHASE TICKETS EARLY. WE EXPECT TO SELL OUT THESE PERFORMANCES.
TICKETS MAY BE PURCHASED AT THE THEATRE (PRIOR TO EACH SHOW), BUT WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE.

Theatre can provide a safe space in which artists can articulate and respond to emotions about bullying. While we are dedicated to providing top-notch training for our theatre artists, the lessons learned in this project extend far beyond acting training. These fictional stories provide opportunities for critical thinking and collaboration in order to practice empathy and build social awareness. We look forward to this incredible journey with the company of The Bully Plays.
